The Dawn Companion Computer

NEVER OPEN THE COMPUTER CASING. DAWN IS CAREFULLY EMI INSULATED AND THIS PROTECTION WILL BE DESTROYED IN OPENING THE CASING.

Computer :

Dawn is based on the RK3399 chipset and features a hexa-core 64 bit arm processor with an A7 dual core and A53 quad core big-little architecture. Dawn leaves the majority of the A53 core open for your processing and Dawn Apps - but reserves the A7 core for time sensitive computations like collision avoidance.

Weight:

Including cables, casing and fan: 92g

Dimensions:

All dimensions are in mm unless otherwise specified

Power Consumption:

You can expect Dawn to use roughly 5w of power under most conditions. Theoretically Dawn can use as much as 7w or as little a 1w, though both are rarely the case.

Dawn can be powered using 8v - 18v. The supply is internally regulated and reverse power protected. This means Dawn isn’t super picky about how noisy your power is. Regardless, a steady power supply is always the best option.

Cables and Connectivity:

Dawn uses USB 3.0 to interface with its cameras. Both USB 3 buses are reserved for Dawn to use in this way and should not be used for anything else. Dawn exposes a USB 2.0 and an HDMI port that can be used in any way you see fit.

Dawn interfaces with autopilots over a serial link at 926100 baud. Cables for this connection and Dawn’s power supply are approximately 93mm in length.

Dawn uses a JST-GH 6 pin connector for serial, which is natively compatible with most modern Pixhawk versions like the Pixhawk 4 and Pixhawk Cube. All of the cables can be configured.

Installation:

If you are using a version of the Dawn companion computer without a built in flight controller then Dawn may be installed in any orientation or location so long as it has access to either open air or a reasonable amount of free-space to allow for the circulation of air. In most containers this means ensuring a minimum of 10mm of separation between the top of the Dawn fan and the end of the compartment containing the unit.

In the case where Dawn contains a flight controller follow setup guides for any normal PX4 based flight control unit.
